Perms are back, baby! Hearing the word perm probably conjures up thoughts of huge ‘80s hair, but the modern reality is far removed from those frizzy memories. Whether you want a looser, loppy curl or tight ringlets, contemporary perming techniques can create a range of looks to suit your style
Perms can also be used on short hair to add body and volume without adding curl.
Even Hollywood is undergoing a perm revolution, with celebrities Emma Stone, Jonathan Van Ness and Olivia Munn rocking beautiful bouncy perm-induced curls!
Perming in 2020 is also much gentler than perms of the past. As technology has advanced, the products used for perms are kinder on the hair and less likely to damage otherwise healthy locks.
While curly hair is naturally more prone to dryness as it prevents oil travelling down the hair shaft, your stylist can recommend suitable products to care for your new ‘do.
However, there is no getting around the permanence of this revived style (hence the name); the typical way to get rid of a perm is to cut the curl out. You’ll need to have your roots re-permed every three to four months to target new hair growth.
Hair Art & Beauty love fashion perms and want to help you live your curly girl dreams. For more information or to see if a perm is right for you, phone (03) 381 8939.
Hair Art and Beauty has a new stylist. We caught up with Sharon Screen about a career that has taken her around the world.
With years of experience I find myself still absolutely passionate about all things ‘hairdressing’.
I’ve travelled the world, creating and showcasing fabulous hairstyles from London, to Italy, France, Japan and even on the catwalks of New York.
Having been an educator to top hairdressers around the world, I’m now loving being back on the salon floor with clients in a great environment as a member of the fabulous Hair Art and Beauty team.
Wether it’s cutting, styling or technical colouring that is required, I’ll enhance your look, create your point of difference and reflect your personality.
As a stylist with exceptional avant-guard cutting skills, technical expertise as a colourist and natural flair, I’ll create looks that are totally on-trend and suited to you.
I offer a very personalised and professional service.
When not in salon, you could well find me consulting clients on their gardens as a landscape architect (BLA Hons), or perhaps I might be helping couples shape their perfect wedding day…. doing all the flowers and venue stylings as I’m also a registered marriage celebrant.
Keeping active is always important, golfing, playing tennis or jumping on my bike for a quick fix and enjoying my family and friends helps make it all worthwhile.
When it comes to hair, my philosophy has always been ‘it’s more important what we leave behind than what we take off!’
Come and find me at Hair Art and Beauty on Wednesdays and Thursdays. I welcome new and existing clients.
For our hair and skin to be in the best condition possible, there are certain nutrients we need. Many factors in today’s modern lifestyle contribute to a nutritional deficiency – stress, environmental pollution, pregnancy hormones, poor sleep, lifestyle choices and diet all cause various nutrients to degrade quickly within our bodies. On top of this, some vitamins and trace minerals are unable to be stored in the body and must be consumed regularly, so getting the correct balance through diet alone can be difficult.
That’s where the La Biosthetique Fanelan Synergie nutritional supplements come in! The Fanelan Synergie capsules contain a balanced blend of trace elements and vitamins which the body needs to create new, healthy hair growth and prevent hair loss.
They also increase the amount of collagen the body naturally produces, minimising the visible signs of aging. Taken regularly for general wellness, they improve the quality of the hair, skin and nails, as well as having an overall positive effect on the body.
They are also incredibly effective at treating thinning hair and hair loss when used in combination with the Methode Regenerante Ergines Plus Vital ampoules – treating the problem both internally and externally.
The Fanelan Synergie tablets are 100 percent vegan, cruelty-free and safe for pregnant and nursing mothers. If you have any worries about hair loss or the general health of your hair, chat to the H&B team who can recommend the best action for you!

H&B is now offering Medical Dermal Needling in salon today! Dermal needling serves two main functions; firstly, it stimulates epidermal growth to provide stronger and healthier skin, secondly, it stimulates the production of collagen, making skin tighter and firmer.
Dermal needling uses a specialised instrument that contains incredibly fine medical needles to create micro punctures on the skin’s surface layer. This triggers the skin’s natural collagen production and restorative processes. The treatment is minimally invasive, however it has been found safer than some other skin treatments such as chemical peels, laser treatments, etc. If you have scars, stretch marks, fine lines and wrinkles or want to give your skin some firming, dermal needling could be for you!
Dermal needling can help to stimulate collagen, increase skin elasticity, soften fine lines and reduce the appearance of scarring, pigmentation and sun damage. It also allows treatment products to be better absorbed by the skin. As every client is different, H&B does require you to have a quick consultation with one of their amazing beauticians beforehand, as they can tailor a treatment plan to your skin needs.

The past six months have been a whirlwind of fabulous experiences and exciting changes at Hair Art & Beauty, Cranford Street.
A whirlwind of fabulous experiences and exciting changes
In October, salon owner Carla travelled to New York to work at Bridal Fashion Week, before jet-setting to Europe to assist Sharon Blain (2018 Hairdressing Educator of the Year) with hosting hair-up workshops.
The salon closed for a few weeks at Christmas, during which time builders were hard at work on a salon makeover. The salon now has a chic new look and stage two has commenced; the building of a brand-new day spa. This purpose-built spa will combine style, luxury and innovation so clients can be pampered with the latest global beauty techniques (such as LED facials and dermal needling), as well as the classics like waxing, IPL and massage.
Hair Art & Beauty was a finalist in the Top Shop awards! Plus, in the past months plenty of team activities were scheduled, like in and out-of-salon-training and delicious meals out as a group, making this a very busy year.
The staff are eager to see what the rest of 2018 has in store. They’re awaiting clients’ reactions to the fabulous salon make-over.
Drop-ins to check out refurbishments and make appointments are always welcome. Or visit www.hairart.co.nz.
Planning a hair shake-up? Need some inspiration from professionals around the world? H&B has been taking notes on the colour trends for autumn 2018 and is ready to help you transform your locks!
With leaves changing and temperatures dropping, red and copper-based colours are making their comeback. The latest autumn trends point towards burgundy and purple-based reds being the must-have. With Pantone’s Colour of the Year being announced as Ultraviolet, many homages to this within the hair industry have been seen already. A dash of purple in a red or brown colour can give a striking result.
With moisture in the air, cold temperatures creeping in and heaters blasting in the office, you may feel a little lacklustre. The Keratin Blowout is an essential treatment for anyone struggling with frizz, fluff, or unmanageable hair. It leaves your hair significantly smoother for up to eight weeks, making blow-drying and flat-ironing a breeze. If done immediately following a colour service, Keratin Blowout will lock in your colour, helping it to look fresh for longer.
Along with its superstar stylists, H&B has beauticians armed with the best and brightest technology. The new Ultraceuticals Sonophoresis service is the perfect add-on to a facial. Using ultrasonic vibrations, it allows your skin to absorb the products used in your facial more efficiently. Pop into H&B now to get a glimpse of the day spa progress – opening this year!
