Bring on the scones: Gorgeous Food

When it comes to the perfect morning tea, specialist bakery Gorgeous Food’s JoAnne Fryer says the humble scone is right up there in the popularity stakes. One that is frequently asked for is the cheese and chive scone.


“If you’re lucky enough to be passing by our doors around 6am, you can get them straight from the oven,” JoAnne says.

Other firm favourites with customers are tasty savouries from the pie warmer; freshly cut sandwiches; slices cut into dainty bite sized pieces to pop in the mouth; and there’s a posse of muffin-mad folk out there who can’t get enough of the Texan muffin with plump blueberries or raspberry and white chocolate.

If you can’t make it to Gorgeous Food for the most scrumptious morning tea ever, don’t despair, for JoAnne has very kindly shared her recipe of Cheese and Chive scones with us. Yay!

Cheese & Chive Scones

• 560g flour
(season with salt, pepper and paprika)
• 8tsp baking powder
• Sift the above together.
• Add 150g grated cheese
• 50g shredded parmesan
• ¼ cup chopped chives
(or other fresh herbs)

Mix together and add enough milk (approx. 2 cups) to make a firm batter. Drop large spoonfuls close together onto an oven tray lined with baking paper.
Sprinkle with paprika, parmesan and grated cheese. Bake in preheated oven at 200°C for 10 to 15 minutse until golden brown and cooked through.

When it comes to sandwiches, these guys are legends. From standard, club or ladies’ sandwiches (ideal for that Christmas Croquet Club knees-up) through to rolls, wraps and paninis, they’ve got it covered.

Fancy savouring something savoury? Then their selection of mini sausage rolls and pies, mini frittatas, cocktail quiches, marinated chicken nibbles, corn fritters, sushi and vegetarian Vietnamese rolls pack a mighty tasty mouthful!

Sweet-toothed folk can feast on scrumptious muffins, friands, cinnamon cream oysters and in-house specialty Gorgeous Slices, while date and cinnamon or double cheese and chives scones are hard to resist. If bikkies are your preference, then afghans, passion moments and gypsy creams make for tantalising treats!

Their quality service doesn’t stop here, for Gorgeous Food also offer made-to-order spicy carrot cake, banana cake and chocolate mud cake, as well as family quiches and family pies.

At Gorgeous Food, the cabinets are full of delicious, quality homestyle pies, sandwiches and sweet treats that have all been lovingly prepared on-site.



The specialist bakery, located at 68 Springs Road, has been open since 2005, catering to hungry locals and those after a quick, delectable bite to eat on the go. Owner JoAnne Fryer, who runs the operation with partner Pete, says, while the service is quick, and the food is ready in a flash, it’s “not your usual takeaway”.

“We bake all our own products, except the bread which is sourced from Vic’s Bakehouse. This makes us quite unique,” she says. “We’re providing quality homestyle baking, using real butter and eggs. “It’s the older-style recipes, like Nana’s Chocolate Fudge, that are the most popular.”

Other favourite items gaining points for nostalgia include Real Beef and Cheese Pies, Bacon and Egg Pies and Carrot Cake. New additions to the line-up, such as the dairy-free and gluten-free Plum and Almond Friands, are quickly becoming popular items on the menu too! For their caffeine fix, customers can also pick up a takeaway Vivace Espresso Coffee, prepared by barista Tammy.

“We have a lot of regulars,” Jo says. “We know all their names, it’s fantastic. It’s a real buzz for us because we’re providing what they want.” The team also offers catering for local morning and afternoon teas, lunches and parties, with all handmade food presented in disposable boxes, ready for you to collect and take home.

Nothing beats a piping hot homemade pie with a succulent filling to warm up a winter’s day. And Gorgeous Food in Wigram takes this hearty Kiwi favourite to the next level.

Owners JoAnne and Pete will enter this year’s New Zealand Bakels Pie Awards – last year they came seventh in the ‘Boutique’ category for their chicken and leek pie. The real beef and cheese and the pepper beef are popular with the hard-working regulars that are known by name here. There are pies and quiches too in the freezer to take home for tea. The latest addition to the pie warmer is handmade savouries, previously only for their catering customers.
Pete and Kayla make an amazing Vivace coffee, with dairy-free options including velvety almond milk, coconut, rice and soy. A real mix of customers, from workmen to office locals, come from Prebbleton and beyond for the fast and friendly service.
Office shouts of lunches and morning teas are a speciality. Sandwiches are made with a larger McKenzie loaf slice, and bacon and egg paninis are breakfast heaven. There’s raspberry and white chocolate and blueberry muffins that are ‘chock full’ – JoAnne promises they won’t disappoint. “I enjoy taking pride in what I make.”

A gorgeous variety: checking out Wigram’s delightful bakery Gorgeous Food

It’s something of an institution on Springs Road in Wigram. For more than ten years the Gorgeous Food specialist bakery has been delighting locals and those from further afield, with its ‘gorgeous’ range of tasty classic and not-so-traditional freshly-made treats, both savoury and sweet.

“We are proud to have served the community for so long,” says co-owner JoAnne Fryer. “Our food is healthy and made fresh every day in our bakery using top quality ingredients. Real butter and eggs – baking the way it should be.”
Firm favourites are the delicious pies, quiches and sausage rolls, as well as the bakery’s own style muffins and scones, Dagwood sandwiches, filled rolls and wraps.
“We have been asked a lot lately for salads and we have really enjoyed creating some especially scrumptious flavour combinations that we have had to try ourselves, of course. We have a chicken teriyaki salad with baby corn and bok choy, a pesto pasta salad with smoked chicken and a roast pumpkin salad with beetroot and feta. They are really good to eat on a hot day – or any day for that matter.”
An array of slices too has customers returning. ”Our gluten-free caramel meringue slice flies off the shelves as does the citrus slice and the ginger macadamia slice. And we are famous for nana’s chocolate fudge slice – a much loved family recipe. A slice and a cup of our takeaway Vivace coffee – what better way to indulge yourself?”
