Thai food for the soul – The Nook
Nestled in New Regent Street’s cornucopia of cuisine is The Nook, a Thai eatery with a menu reminiscent of the food and flavour of owner Natapat Intaroonwong (Fon)’s mother.
“Icame here with a broken heart,” says The Nook Thai Eatery owner Fon.
Cooking the dishes she’d learnt from her mother in Thailand was Fon’s way of curing her homesickness.
It was so delicious – traditional flavour meets fresh local produce – that Fon’s friends encouraged her to open a restaurant and fill the menu with Asian favourites.
From the world’s number one soup, Khao Soi, to roasted duck curry, fish with tamarind sauce and herbs, and mouth-watering boat noodles with Fon’s homemade meatball recipe, each dish offers the flavours found back home in her homeland and Thai village.
Fon’s secret? Passion, pure Thai cuisine talent, and perhaps her unwavering commitment to cook with “only the best herbs” (like kaffir lime at $80 a kilo).
For the spring/summer season, Fon introduces a fresh yet sweet selection of traditional Thai desserts, including sweet sticky rice with mango, coconut milk custard, and kanom met khanun, bite-sized, oval-shaped treats dipped in syrup with a nutty flavour (and one of the nine traditional lucky Thai desserts).
Lunch start from just $15, with takeaway available from 12pm, and a delicious dinner menu for bigger feasts. Book your table on 03 365 2465 or visit thenookeatery.co.nz.
