It’s said that out of bad comes good, and if there’s one thing we Kiwis have embraced during these Covid-challenged times, it’s showing our support for all things local.
Giftware and homeware store Industria showcases curated artworks of paintings, ceramics, sculptures, garden art, jewellery and so much more from the cream of Aotearoa artisans.
Stunning Kiwiana imagery from 100% New Zealand; exquisite handcrafted jewellery from Julia Huyser Design and Rainey Designs; sustainable steelworks from Lisa Sarah Steel Art, and gorgeous garden birds from Metalbird, gives an indication of the fabulous NZ brands instore at Industria.
With two stores – at The Colombo and Rolleston Square – there’s every reason to plan a great day out, browsing the best of authentic, organic New Zealand giftware.
Ashburton’s Lushington Garden Gifts and Café is a trove of pleasure. Delighting the senses, it’s the ideal break on a journey, the perfect destination itself for a few hours’ treat with friends, or a soul-restoring solo escape.
The garden centre is award-winning and you can see why, with its beautiful displays, and a range of plants that is guaranteed to inspire. There are lots of living gifts and a gorgeous selection of indoor plants.
The range of plants is huge, and you’ll be assisted in your selections by the knowledgeable and experienced team. Local and sustainable are watchwords, and the team pride themselves on the quality of the plants, many of which are grown in their nursery at Allenton, which also helps to keep the prices competitive.
Inside you’ll find the café, the gift and homewares shop. Worked around a ‘country comes to town theme’ you’ll find beautiful French and English inspired giftware, while in the café you’ll find delicious wholesome and homemade cakes and slices, plus full breakfast, lunch and sides menus, which cater for gluten free and vegetarian diners.
Co-owners and sisters Miranda Sinton and Sophie Duff are locals who grew up on a farm in Mayfield. They’ve brought their love of the wholesome and artisan to Lushingtons, where the plants, great food and gorgeous gifts have been nurtured for ten years. “It’s just a great place to revel in beautiful plants, meet with friends for lunch in a licensed cafe then browse the gifts and home-wares,” says Miranda.

There’s plenty to discover at vintage store Dusty Old Things, who have recently settled into a bright new location on Wairakei Road.
The larger venue means they can stock even more spectacular finds from jewellery to tools and everything in between.
Owner Glenis Parker wants to thank all her new and existing customers for their support during the transition, but it’s still business as usual. “We’re selling a vast range of items,” she says. “Vintage jewellery, clothing, linen, pottery, glassware, collectables, and furniture from all eras.
“A dedicated clothing room also includes hats and fascinators which are great for that ‘one-of-a-kind, individual look for any occasion.’”
Top-selling items are the vintage and retro lights (more arriving late September), home and furniture accessories, and realistic artificial flowers that brighten up any room.
With plentiful parking, popping into the shop at 526 Wairakei Road is easy – you never know what purchases you’ll discover to take home.
If you’ve visited Waikari recently, you’ll know Pam’s Café & Gifts is the perfect place to stop for quality food and a great coffee. What makes it even better is the range of unique giftware on display offering something for everyone.
In the two years it has been at its current location, locals and visitors alike have been making the shop their first port of call when they’re in the Canterbury town.
Owner Pam Burrows says the secret lies in their range of quality homestyle food and Hummingbird coffee. Currently, the most popular items on the menu are the decadent carrot cake and date loaf, which are made on-site, using all-natural ingredients, and taste “just like grandma used to make”.
There is also an extensive breakfast and lunch menu available, and the scones, pies and afghan cookies all receive rave reviews.
If the sun is shining, guests can make the most of the outdoor seating, or stay indoors enjoying the warmth of the conservatory.
In the gift shop, you’ll find homemade jam, baby wear, women’s ponchos, manuka products, toys, cards, quirky signs and more.
Pam has recently introduced a mobile coffee cart to the business, which is now available for events. From Thursday through to Sunday, the café is also open late serving fish and chips.

Recovering from the adrenalin adventures Hanmer Springs is known for has never been as easy or as relaxing as it has been since Mickey Raes burst open its doors in this winter wonderland.
It’s been a year since Wendy Lamont took her formerly home-based business to the next level, with a beautiful store in Hanmer Springs’ Boulder Point Precinct. “It’s taken off so much more than I had ever hoped,” Wendy says. “Without sounding cliché, we really are a one stop shop for crafts and giftware, with something here for everyone.”
Mickey Raes is nestled comfortably in the figurative and literal heart of Hanmer, opposite the duck pond and, with Boulder Point Precinct’s exceptional spread of businesses offering everything from coffee and a bite to eat, to gourmet burgers and beautiful Scandinavian clothing, it’s the ultimate spot to spend a recovery day off the slopes.
Crafts such as knitting, crochet, sewing and quilting have been experiencing a serious resurgence and Mickey Raes stocks a full range of craft, sewing and knitting supplies, fabrics and haberdashery. Craft kits, including the popular Diamond Dotz, provide everything you need for some clever projects to keep you busy and there’s a range of books to teach you what you need to know. Better yet, you can whip up some winter warmers with the large supply of wool you can find here.
“It’s a great opportunity to try out some new crafts and activities without spending too much and winter is the best time to give them all a go!” True to Wendy’s history as a wedding accessory supplier, she stocks all those handy last minute extras that might be needed on the day, “such as bridal horse shoes, car ribbons and the emergency veil,” she laughs.
It’s a great stop for giftware, including christenings and 21st presents and Wendy even makes custom made Christmas stockings. There’s a carefully curated range of eco-friendly products, including pet beds made from recycled bottle fibre. “We’re celebrating being open a year and it has been an amazing year. I’m thankful to all the wonderful customers who have supported me over the past year.”
