A summer stunner: The Fitting Room

As more and more clothing manufacturers worldwide are stepping up to planet responsibility, it’s heartening to see producers of swimwear are contributing significantly to issues around environment.

Deborah Lewthwaite, owner of bra specialist boutique The Fitting Room, says many of the swimwear brands in-store are developing a range of swimsuits of recycled origin.|

“We see swimsuits that have been made from recycled fishing nets, while others, such as all of the Zoggs range, are made from recycled plastic,” she says.

Another big and necessary advancement is swimwear made of fabric with higher resistance to chlorine; no longer need we face the depressing sight of a much loved but also much perished swimsuit.

The Fitting Room specialises in fuller cup bras (sizes C to K), and swimwear, such as Jantzen, Sunseeker, Seafolly and Freya, also come in fuller cups.

For a welcoming, private, one-on-one consultation, Deborah recommends booking an appointment online.

With two locations, Fendalton and Sydenham (the latter has great behind-store parking), make this a stunner summer in something fabulous from The Fitting Room…and while you’re there, why not gift the girlfriends a Christmas voucher? They’ll love you for it! | |

Swimwear style

Quintessential summer events like pool parties, beach bonanzas and New Year soirées are calling… but first, let’s sort that swimwear collection. Read on to get acquainted with some of the hottest looks of the sunny season.

Wild one
Surprise, surprise – animal print is top of the list. Fierce one and two-piece silhouettes in tiger stripes, leopard spots, snakeskin and more prowled down the catwalk this year, alongside other exotic safari and jungle-inspired prints.

The LBB (little black bikini)
This bad boy is the classic staple for any summer closet. The little black bikini imparts effortless chic, and judging by runways the globe over, we won’t be short of variety. Signature string styles, plunging necklines and underwire bandeaus are all getting the black treatment.

Surfer chic
Wetsuit-style one-pieces with chunky zips are making waves, as is swimwear with sleeves – say what? Whether you’re looking for more UV protection or you want a more elegant, stylish piece, sleeved bikinis and one-pieces will do just the trick.

All in the straps
Statement straps are having their moment… pretty ruffled straps and bikini tops with short flowy sleeves both featured at Miami Swim Week, alongside teeny-tiny, super-skinny straps. If you can’t decide, why not try a one-shoulder piece? This on-trend asymmetrical look is sleek, sophisticated and more practical than other current swimsuit styles.

Retro revival
Retro styles are sure to have their fair share of appearances this season, as high-waisted bikini briefs, fun 70s florals, timeless polka dots and super-sweet gingham all inject vintage cool into the modern trends of the moment.

Brilliant brights
Fluorescent hues pack that playful punch; neon blue gives off major beach babe vibes, while a pop of yellow is bound to get you in the summer mood. Juicy citrus hues are in the mix, along with the sizzling shades of highlighter green and shocking purple.

Summer shimmer
Take a plunge into bold style with gleaming metallic styles, sparkly lurex and embellished pieces. Tanning is no doubt top of your summer agenda, so consider earthy tones like chocolate-browns, golds, rusts and bronzes – the perfect complementary shades for sun-kissed skin. Keep the design simple – these fabrics speak for themselves.

The swimwear for summer: The Fitting Room

Finding the perfect swimsuit ready for those warm summer days may be a daunting thought, but the expert team at The Fitting Room is here to help.

With two welcoming stores located on Fendalton Road and Colombo Street (opposite The Colombo), you’ll find it easier than you anticipated. The styles displayed on the shop floor are only a small taster of what’s available in the stockroom, where there’s many hidden treasures and extra sizes. Ask one of the friendly fitters for advice and they can match you with your perfect swimwear.

You’ll find an endless range of quality, specialist international brands in a myriad of colours, styles and designs, like Seafolly Australia, Jets and Jantzen. Options also include shelf support and pre-pocketing for prosthesis. They cater to all ages, preferences and sizes, so everyone walks away feeling fantastic for the poolside. Although The Fitting Room stocks swimwear in all sizes, their specialty in lingerie is fuller-cup sizes (C-K), and also bras and swimwear for women with prostheses who’ve had mastectomy surgery.

The friendly team at the Fendalton store offer a late night on Thursdays (5:30pm-8pm, by appointment only), and there’s also a huge range available on The Fitting Room’s online store.

Owner Deborah Lewthwaite says her team is passionate about providing fabulous fitting bras and swimwear and making it an easy and fun shopping experience. “Our range of styles is constantly being honed as we trial new brands and find new winners. Prima Donna, a luxury Belgian brand, is one we’ve recently acquired, and customers love it so much we’re ordering more styles each season.”

Make a splash! Fashionworks

When it comes to making a splash this sartorial season, it’s all about the latest and greatest in swimwear.

With an expansive range of swimwear, Lifestyles in the alpine haven of Hanmer Springs is the ideal place to bring life to your summer wardrobe. Many make a weekend of it, as they can pop across to the pools and show them off!  Owner Alice Stielow is armed with options to suit everyone. “Many of us pull out last season’s swimwear that’s been stored away and realise just how thin and see-through the material has become.

“This is the ideal time to find something new, with styles and colours to complement you.” She’s seeing a lot of retro styles coming through this season, along with on-form florals and beautiful block colours. Buttercup yellow is a hot tip. Meanwhile the super-high-cut swimsuit – the Baywatch-esque silhouette which soars above the hip is hot property for the younger generation, with brands such as Piha and Billabong offering great options.

Alice owns two stores, Lifestyles and Fashionworks, and after three decades here, she understands how important fit is to the finished look. “Colour and style are one thing, but getting the right fit for your body is what really matters.”  Meanwhile her second boutique store, Fashionworks, is a designer-label paradise for womenswear, footwear and jewellery. Clothing ranges from Wish and Ivy Blu, to CooperStreet and Augustine are complemented by a beautiful range of shoes including D&J and Hey Monday.

Bond-Eye’s Sea-level range (formerly Nip-Tuck) suits many different figures, as do Seafolly and Moontide, in sizes up to a G cup. “Ruching across front and sides, or styles that wrap around the body, give a lovely shape to show off all those beautiful figures out there,” owner Alice Stielow says. There’s Piha, Sunseeker, Jantzen, unique-styled JETS and Togs – from a Kiwi designer. “Tankini and pants are also perfect for those long in body, or for mixing and matching. The staff are really knowledgeable with body-types and know straight away what styles are best to try on.”

Forget budgie smugglers, the latest men’s speedo’s come in cool elastic-waisted trunks and there’s also styles for serious swimmers – all chlorine-resistant. Lifestyles’ urban wear includes Billabong, Ketz-ke, White Chalk, Stussy, Tigerlily, RVCA, Element, All About Eve, Levis, VonZipper, and a cool range of shoes.
