Our venue, your way: Milton St Substation

Historic, versatile and fun all describe the popular Milton St Substation as a weddings, events and functions venue in central Christchurch. Warm brick tones, an industrial interior vibe, and several separate areas to utilise indoors and out, combine to make it a terrific place to exchange vows.

Business as usual has been the work ethos, making it one of Christchurch’s most popular and busiest wedding venues during the past few months.

As an events, functions and wedding venue, the Milton St Substation has everything needed on the one site, wrapped up in a picturesque, historic parcel and tied with a contemporary bow.

Venue manager Alex Balchin says its capacity for up to 290 guests has meant Milton St has been able to carry on.

“Last year was by far the busiest we have had,” he says. Previously we hosted one or two a month; now we have Friday, Saturday and Sunday weddings each week.”

Along with its historic relevance to the city, having several different spaces within the one that makes it really versatile.

Dine in style
With seating for 120 guests, there’s plenty of scope for themes, and for all the family and friends to celebrate.
Catering, decorations, table settings, flowers, music, alcohol, lighting and room usage are all the choice of the happy couple. Staff are provided.

Ceremony options
A variety of different rooms, upstairs and down, are suitable for the actual ceremony. Book early as dates tend to fill up quickly. Bookings are only taken for each year, starting at the beginning of the year. A booking means the whole venue for 24 hours.

Outdoor celebrations
An outdoor courtyard, entrance lobby, upstairs balcony and quiet lounge area allow guests of different ages to celebrate in their own comfort zones. The ground floor is ideal for dancing, and Milton St has one of Christchurch’s latest venue closing times.
