Look after your liver

This time of year is fun and festive, but also busy and full on. Social calendars are often full, and healthy routines are usually a distant memory.

Indulging is normal around the silly season, so it is good practice to keep a few healthy habits close by.

Our liver especially can take a big hit this time of year.
The liver works hard to cleanse the body of all those threatening ‘liver loaders’ which include alcohol, fried foods, sugar, caffeine and also refined carbohydrates.

Here are some ways in which the Unichem Cashel Pharmacy suggests you can support your liver:
– Drink enough water throughout the day (aim for 30ml per kg / body weight)
– Add more green leafy vegetables to your diet. They are high in B vitamins which help with detoxification.
– Increase consumption of sulphur-based foods which also help your liver detoxify. – These includes eggs, broccoli, spinach garlic, onion, and kale.
– Minimise alcohol. When drinking, have a glass of water between each alcoholic drink.
– Try and keep coffee to one per day.
– Drink a green breakfast smoothie to stimulate the liver to release toxins.
