Igniting young imaginations: Scorpio Children’s Books

Books and reading are two of the great pleasures of life. There are few better places for youngsters to experience the joy that books bring than the new dedicated children’s bookshop Telling Tales: Scorpio Children’s Books, located in the BNZ Centre.

The space is bright, sunny, colourful and welcoming and, of course, filled with thousands of books to ignite children’s imaginations.

“We try to display as much as possible at a child’s eye level,” explains manager Rebecca Jones. “We want children to feel that the place is comfortable and safe and made especially for them. After all, encouraging reading and sharing the joy of storytelling is what we are all about.”

Telling Tales is aimed for young readers under 14 and showcases the best of children’s publishing. There are board books for toddlers, early readers for those starting school and graphic novels for youngsters who read through pictures.

There is a large classic section with books of myths and legends and of fairy tales and poetry. Non-fiction features too, by both New Zealand and overseas writers.

“We wanted to set up a treasure trove for the children of Christchurch,” says Rebecca.  “A cosy place to explore and discover, to immerse themselves in tall tales and adventures and in everything that books and reading have to offer.”
