Hanmer trails
Spring is the perfect time to explore bike trails in the alpine village of Hanmer Springs.
Surrounded by hills and forests, Hanmer Springs makes it easy to escape into nature and getting on your bike is a great way to enjoy the natural beauty of the area while getting plenty of fresh air and exercise.
Connected by a network of walking trails, mountain biking and horse trails, you’ll find routes for all levels of ability and energy. You can even hire mountain bikes in the village, so don’t worry if you’ve left your wheels at home.

For more information and a map of the trails, go to www.hanmertrails.co.nz or head to the isite information centre at 40 Amuri Avenue, where staff can help direct you to a trail that’s ideal for you. For inspiration on the kind of trails available for your cycling pleasure, here’s a starting point:
Family-friendly: Dog Stream Reserve, with its small Pump Track, is the perfect place for families to hone their skills.
Easy: Perseverance, a 1.5km route that undulates under a canopy of trees.
Intermediate: Swamp, a 1.9km route that winds uphill around the contours of a hill.
Advanced: Big Foot, a Hanmer classic route, this 2km ride climbs its way up through established Spruce and Fir trees before the iconic long rolling descent.
Expert: Eagles Nest, a 273-metre trail that ascends to the Conical Hill lookout before descending over rocky obstacles and ramps towards a white-knuckle final stretch. Fifteen minutes
of adrenaline.
