Beat the blues

Are you experiencing mood swings, feeling down in the dumps, can’t be bothered?

Some simple techniques may help to lift your mood naturally, rather than reaching for a pill bottle.
Try one or two ideas at a time to find what works best for you.

Water

Staying well hydrated is important for good mood balance, and nervous system health. Water is needed for your body to function, be alert, and help with electrical signalling between the brain and the body. Water also equalises intense emotions. Whether it’s listening to, or watching, a flowing river, the lapping waves, or a trickling fountain, moving water, and its blue-green colours are known to increase feelings of peace and calm.

Community

Finding a community that you resonate with can give you a sense of belonging and feeling of purpose. Look for a club that’s fun and friendly. Singing and dancing clubs are great at lifting mood, and if you like to sing and dance it’s virtually impossible to do it without smiling and feeling happier. Alternatively consider a sports club, the social and team aspect of sports can help you build confidence and you’ll get endorphins from the exercise.

Animals

If you’re an animal lover, you will already know how animal connection can lift your mood and make everything seem all right. Tactile contact with animals is well known for easing feelings of anxiety, depression, PTSD, lowering stress levels (and cortisol), and increasing “happy hormones” such as serotonin. Whether cuddling with pets or volunteering at an animal shelter, the positive effects on mood are truly remarkable.
