Authentic cuisine: The China Kitchen


Fresh, hand-made and delicious all describe one of Christchurch’s long-standing Chinese restaurants.

Renowned for its dumplings, The China Kitchen in Papanui has survived earthquakes and latterly the Covid-19 pandemic, and is still going strong in its 21st year.

This family-owned restaurant continues to produce the same fresh authentic Chinese food that has delighted its customers for many years, with a loyal; following of dine-in and takeaway clientele.

Co-owner Stella Li says the most popular menu item are its dumplings, featuring pork and chives, chicken and spinach, or a vegetarian option.

“We make them fresh every day [400 at a time], and we use our own pastry. We use all fresh, local, healthy ingredients, and we always cook with Canola oil to ensure the same delicious taste each time,” she adds.

Other secrets to the success of The China Kitchen are its non-use of MSG, and its gluten-free options. The restaurant is beautifully decorated with

Chinese murals, while the spacious kitchen has three wok stations, enabling fast and efficient service.

The menu features an impressive featuring 102 dishes. Favourites — dumplings aside — include chicken and cashews with vegetables, and barbeque pork with teriyaki chicken.
