Dopamine décor

Inspired by Dame Trelise Cooper’s ‘dopamine dressers’, we invite you to oxytocin your interiors, Ōtautahi. Dopamine décor – the philosophy that heroes vibrant, personal aesthetics over rigid design rules – can boost your mood just as much as clothing that makes you feel good.

What is dopamine décor?
Decorating for your own happiness. Dopamine décor means to trust your interior design intuition. Choose and use what makes you feel good – a bright colour that reminds you of summer holidays or a lamp that takes you down memory lane. Personal pleasure is paramount. Homes are meant to be emotionally uplifting.

Why does my brain like it?
In 2011, neurobiologists Semir Zeki and Tomohiro Ishizu penned a “brain-based theory of beauty”, that says the brain’s medial orbitofrontal cortex (a reward centre connected to dopamine release) is activated when viewing beautiful art. The same theory underpins dopamine dressing. Other studies have found that colourful surroundings can enhance other senses and experiences (yes, boring household chores might feel better in joy-inducing interiors). Design experts say the perception change is post-pandemic, as society looks to better understand how their home impacts mental health.

How do I apply that to my home?
Start with a ‘joy audit’. Which items evoke a feeling, and which feel forced? Focus on the ones that make you smile. Locally-crafted artwork, tokens from travel, family keepsakes… make a conscious reminder to hero these in your home and slowly shift away from the pieces you don’t feel anything for. Don’t worry about mismatched photo frames or colours that would traditionally clash. Instead, utilise neutral materials like wood to ground a space. Take a similar approach next time you’re in your favourite homewares store. Find what instantly attracts you. Not because you saw it at your friend’s house or you know it’s trending, but because it makes you feel happy.
