Christchurch scalp specialist and hair stylist Tatsushi Hasegawa reveals three warning signs you shouldn’t ignore.

“Every scalp tells a story, and I love helping people understand what their scalp is trying to tell them,” says Tatsushi Hasegawa (Hase) of SERENDIPITY+ Head Spa. A master in scalp health, and one of few in the hair industry dedicated to it, Hase’s passion reflects two decades of observation – from Mod’s Hair Japan to international work as a hair and makeup artist. Here, he breaks down common scalp issues, and the key warning signs that indicate it’s time to take action.

1. Flakiness and itching. Do you notice white flakes on your shoulder or feel the need to constantly itch? Dryness, excessive oil, or shampoo residue not properly rinsed out could be the cause, Hase says. If left untreated, these symptoms could lead to inflammation or hair thinning over time.

2. Oily scalp and odour. If your scalp feels greasy at the end of the day, or you smell something unpleasant when removing your hat, this could be a sign of oxidised sebum or oils and clogged pores – which can’t be fixed with regular shampooing alone. A proper scalp cleanse is essential to reset the scalp environment.

3. Lack of volume. Is your hair falling flat or looking limp at the roots? Do you see your part line widening? These are common signs of poor scalp circulation or fatigue weakening hair roots. A relaxing head spa helps to stimulate blood flow and support stronger, healthier hair.
