A slice of love
Love has four letters, and so does cake, and no wedding is complete without a generous helping of both.
Modern wedding cakes come in all shapes and sizes, single and multiple tiered, plain and fancy.
A wedding cake was originally a luxury item, and a sign of celebration and social status (the bigger the cake, the higher the social standing). Early wedding cakes in England and early America were traditionally fruit cakes, topped with marzipan and icing.
During ancient Greek and Roman nuptials, the groom broke bread over the bride’s head, to symbolise her submission, the end of her purity, and to represent good luck and fertility.
