Creating cake art: Twisted Flour and Sugar Merchants
Wedding cakes have their roots in Ancient Rome. Marriage ceremonies ended with a scone-like wheat or barley cake broken over the bride’s head for luck and fertility. Today things are rather different and the options in wedding cake design and flavour are endless.
Mother and daughter Sally Holt and Kate Podmore of Twisted Flour know that a wedding cake is more than just a centrepiece at the wedding reception. It’s a work of art by its creator. That’s what gives them the greatest pleasure.
“The size, design, colour and flavour of a cake is up to our couples”, say Sally and Kate. “We will do whatever they want, after all it is for their special day.
More and more we are finding that couples are daring to be different, playing around with colour, texture and shape. If they have a crazy idea for a unique dream wedding cake we will put our creative genius to work, making that idea a reality. ”Sally and Kate love to live up to their name. They say they are a bit “twisted” and “one of a kind” as are their cakes. “We make bold cakes that wow”, they say.
Yet behind the quirkiness and wit of many of their creations there is real skill and experience. Sally has been creating wedding cakes for over 40 years. She has a floristry background as well and takes real pleasure in creating florals for cakes whether that be with fondant, real flowers or artificial flowers. Kate has followed her mother’s passion and has a special talent in making fondant figurines for cakes to make them truly personalised for the clients.
Each cake these girls make is a precious creation, not to be let out of their sight until they deliver it to a venue, position it on its table and make any necessary finishing touches.
“When you have a cake that might weigh 70 kilos or be several tiers high, you really want to make sure that it reaches its destination in one piece.”
Cutting the cake is the highlight of the wedding reception – something no guest wants to miss. They certainly will not want to miss the cutting and the eating of a Twisted Flour cake. As Sally and Kate say “You might lose your mind a little when you taste our cakes.”
