What are the ‘breast’ reduction options?
1. Breast Reduction by Tumescent Liposuction (BRTL) performed by Dermatological surgeons such as Dr Bellaney. For before and after photos visit www.encorehealth.co.nz/gallery/
2. Breast reduction by surgery (SBR) typically performed by general or plastic surgeons.
Why opt for the alternative (BRTL) option over surgery?
It is able to give a significant reduction and comes with a much lower complication rate than traditional SBR. It’s also a form of keyhole surgery so leaves very little visible scars.
Is there an age restriction?
Over the age of 40 most women will have at least 40 to 60 percent or more of their breast tissue composed of fat and significant reduction by BRTL is almost always possible. That said, clinicians have found younger women’s breasts are still able to be reduced by BRTL but the technique’s success is definitely less predictable in women under 40.
What is the recovery time like?
Apart from heavy lifting, most normal duties can be resumed within a week for most people. There is usually a bruise-like discomfort for 2 to 3 weeks after the procedure and temporary lumpiness of the breast can persist for 2 to 3 months. Other side effects are either mild or rare and will be discussed during any consultation.
