The Influencers: Lianne Dalziel

Take a stand

Christchurch Mayor Lianne Dalziel

Yes, it is that time again. Nominations have opened for the local body elections and close on 12 August.

We already have a couple of high-profile candidates for the Mayoralty, which is great – turnout always increases with such
a contest.

Were you thinking of putting your hat in the ring too? Or could you see yourself filling one of the 16 seats at the council table? Or is a Community Board role for you?

Do you have what it takes? Would you bring innovative thinking to the table?

Do you add some perspectives that could be under-represented?

Do you care about future generations?

Now is your chance to represent Ōtautahi, Christchurch.

This year we are losing some of our diversity. Councillor Jimmy Chen spearheaded the development of the country’s first Multicultural Strategy, while also championing the needs of the wider community and ensuring everyone had a voice.

Why is this important? Every piece of international research into corporate boards tells us that diversity matters to the success of the company.  A council is not a corporate board, but the same principle applies.

Tackling problems with the benefit of different perspectives helps with making better decisions. If that sounds like you and you’re up for a challenge, then stand up and be counted.
