The Influencers: Lianne Dalziel

Remembering the past

At this time of year our thoughts inevitably turn to 22 February 2011 and the people and places that we lost on that day.

On past anniversaries we have gathered with the families of those killed or injured in the earthquake to collectively express our grief, our sorrow and our gratitude to all those who came to our aid.

This year there will be no such public gathering. Instead, we will find our own ways to reflect on that day. While 22 February will always be a sad day, I will also remain optimistic for the future of our city, and the place it is becoming.

Visitors to the city, especially those who haven’t been here for a while, are excited by what they see. People are now lining up to buy central city apartments within walking distance of amazing attractions like Tūranga and the Riverside Market, as well as Hagley Park and the Botanic Gardens.

Unfortunately, the Covid-19 pandemic and the protections that have been put in place to help stop the spread of the virus mean central city businesses have had a
hard time.

Sadly, it’s going to get worse before it gets better judged by overseas experience. But it will get better, and we will once again be able to make the most of our new city.
