Spring Time is Heart-break: Contemporary Art in Aotearoa

A line from Ursula Bethell’s poem, ‘October, 1935’, inspires this exhibition where Aotearoa artists, many with strong connections to Ōtautahi, will be showing fresh contemporary work that is reflective of current issues and all have an intimate story to tell. These works are exclusive to this exhibition, making this a special chance to see a vast collection of emotive art in one place.

Working in textiles, sculpture, painting, photography, moving images, and sound, the 24 artists in Spring Time is Heart-break: Contemporary Art in Aotearoa explore the transitions between places, and across time.

The variety of artists include Anoushka Akel, Emerita Baik, Wendelien Bakker, Megan Brady, Heidi Brickell, Juliet Carpenter, Angel C. Fitzgerald, Tyne Gordon, John Harris and Steven Junil Park, Priscilla Rose Howe, Abigail Aroha Jensen, Madison Kelly,
Etanah Lalau-Talapā, Jimmy Ma’ia’i, Lucy Meyle, Sam Norton, Campbell Patterson, Tia Ranginui, Luke Shaw, Sorawit Songsataya, Sriwhana Spong, Ilish Thomas, and Aliyah Winter.

Mark the calendar, this will be an immersive experience through contemporary art in Aotearoa, where these artists challenge conventions, provoke thought, and capture the essence of the changing world.
