Seasonal style

Tis nearly the season for tinsel and pine, although traditional Christmas decorations don’t fit everyone’s style.

Adding a bit of festive flair to your home doesn’t need to mean classic red, green and gold decorations hung on every possible surface. Check out Metropol’s tips for creating a more stripped back, modern Christmas look.

  1. Use natural shades instead of loud reds and greens. Earthy browns and coppers, deep leafy greens, and soft neutrals are great alternatives. Use linen in colours like beige or caramel as table runners or at the base of the Christmas tree to add a soft, modern look to the space.
  2. Instead of a traditional Christmas tree, decorate a rustic piece of driftwood or long pine branch. These can be suspended horizontally, or leaned up against a wall. Get creative and have some fun with stripped back tree alternatives, decorating with a bit of glitz will really bring it to life.
  3. Less is sometimes best, especially if you are wanting more of a modern Christmas look. Choose a few key features, such as a tree, a wreath and some lighting and just focus on those elements. This will create less clutter, and look cohesive and intentional throughout the home.
  4. Instead of traditional fairy lights, use candles to light the home in the evening. These could be anything from tea lights along mantel pieces, to funky coloured or shaped candles to feature in the kitchen, living, bathroom or bedrooms. For an extra touch, opt for pine or gingerbread scents.
