Kaikōura’s name is all about food. In Te reo Māori – Kai means food and Kōura means crayfish. For those up for an adventure, you can go diving for crayfish and cook up an excellent seafood dinner. Ensure you understand the laws around snagging one of these delicious crustaceans. For example a maximum of six crayfish per day.

Or you could treat yourself to a seafood feast at one of the local restaurants, where you can savour (already caught) mouthwatering crayfish, scallops, paua, and other
delectable delicacies.

If you are one that prefers to sit back and watch nature from afar, hop on a whale watching boat. You can experience what people from all over the world come to Kaikōura for, the incredible movements of whales in their natural habitat. It’s truly awe-inspiring. You may even spot some dolphins.
