From the Green Giant expert: Enjoy the garden. Forget the jobs.
Horticultural expert Nathan Neath from Green Giant Gardens says spring is when gardens in Christchurch get moving, and good maintenance is about staying one step ahead.
With a hot, dry and windy summer ahead, I’ll be keeping a close eye on irrigation issues, plant stress, pruning and anything vulnerable to strong winds. Other things to watch out for are early signs of thrips, aphids or mealybugs. They’re often easy to treat early, but much harder to control by midsummer.
Just last week, we sorted out some Viburnums still showing heavy thrip damage from last summer. Now’s a good time to cut them back, feed and spray to encourage clean new growth and get on top of the problem.
We’re also watching for plant overcrowding, sparse areas, and things that simply aren’t working as well as they once did. That’s the value of regular maintenance. We’re not just turning up to tidy. We’re looking at the whole garden and taking care of what needs attention at the right time.
