Finding authentic flavour: Tanoshi

For those in the know, this is the city’s best kept secret for Japanese cuisine.

“In Christchurch, we knew we were up against a vibrant city with a big population, and we had to match that energy,” recalls Tanoshi owner Matty Yates three years on from the opening. With their biggest team and most extensive fit-out, Tanoshi became all about offering more – more flavours, more atmosphere, more unique dining opportunities.

Known as an izakaya in Japan, the popular central city establishment is home to Tanoshi’s tapas-style plates and the famous Ramen Ramen create-your-own menu, plus a curated sake bar. “I was concerned with a potential identity crisis and I thought it might be complicated to offer two menus and a sake bar, but demand is a great form of flattery,” Matty laughs.

With an award-winning five establishments South Island-wide, Tanoshi is one of few New Zealand restaurants using authentic Japanese ramen cooking methods. “It’s a labour of love,” Matty explains. “We boil for up to 14 hours to extract that umami flavour from the bones. It’s worth it to uphold authenticity and tradition.”

Tanoshi emulates the back alley streets of Osaka – through authentic food and an aesthetic feel – so hidden away behind Oxford Terrace is just where it belongs. “You have to find us just like you would in Japan.” When you get there, you’ll learn it’s made for the city and best devoured in good company.

Find Tanoshi at 93 Cashel Street; call 03 421 3622 or visit their website to book a table.
