Biketober – riding in style

Cycling in style

What’s the best $20 you ever spent on clothes? For Katy McRae, it was her long, leather coat – an “absolute steal” from TradeMe.

She wears it on her cycle commute when the weather is less than pleasant. “I’ll also wear a skirt or dress and stockings on those days, as they dry out a lot faster than trousers.”

The epitome of style on a bicycle, Katy is an advocate of wearing what makes you look good and feel great. She says high heels are no problem, but wooden clogs are ideal.
For Katy, cycling creates vital “mental space” between work and home, and only a strong wind puts her off.

A Biketober event led by Women in Urbanism features more people sharing how they ride in style in all weather.
October 28, 3-5pm, at Two Thumbs. Details of this, and dozens of other events, are at the website below.

Biketober

Biketober, a fusion of “bike” and “October,” rolls into Christchurch, New Zealand, every year as a month-long fiesta of cycling.

This joyful celebration is not exclusive, it’s open to all riders and all types of bicycles, whether you pedal for transportation, leisure, competition, honing your skills, or simply for the sheer joy of it. As spring blooms in the Southern Hemisphere, Biketober offers the perfect excuse to dust off your bike and soak up some sunshine.
The heart of Biketober lies in its celebration of Christchurch’s exceptional cycleway infrastructure. It demonstrates that cycling can be a delightful and safe mode of transport for most journeys. Organised by the passionate cycling advocates at Spokes Canterbury, in collaboration with local businesses and the Christchurch City Council, Biketober has been a fixture for over two decades.

The Biketober calendar boasts a diverse range of events and activities, from guided and self-guided rides to social gatherings, bike repair workshops, seminars, and more. Many of these events are free, making it accessible to all. The Biketober Passport adds an extra layer of excitement, encouraging participants to explore over 40 local attractions and businesses, collect unique codes, and stand a chance to win fabulous prizes.
