Award-Winning Design & Style

When a builder needs a new headquarters, who does he turn to? Himself of course, with help from multi-award-winning interior designers.

The result is national recognition in the NKBA Excellence in Design Awards 2022 for Armstrong Interiors and the Gregg Architectural Builders new office project.

The collaborative effort for the “Builders Office Transformation” won the NKBA Excellence in Design Awards 2022 for designer Angelique Armstrong, of Armstrong Interiors, in the Spatial Innovation Design – Commercial category, and the Canterbury Chapter Recognition category.

Having outgrown their office of 10 years, and tired of working in an environment that was often cluttered, Gregg Architectural Builders’ brief was for a new office space with an adjacent workshop.

The new spatial layout includes a front entrance waiting area, curved reception counter, director’s office with memorabilia feature wall, two managers’ offices, boardroom, staff kitchen, storeroom and two WCs.

Oak veneer was chosen for the cabinetry fronts to bring a sense of warmth and calm, along with contrasting black and white Alucci finishes for desktops, fronts and shelves.

Extra details in the design include the glass handle cut-outs and rounded end panels that bring continuity of curves to the reception counter and the joinery.

Company principal Colin Gregg says he has worked with Armstrong Interiors from when they first started, so it was a simple choice to make when it came to the fit-out of the company’s new offices.

“Angelique implemented her style and thoughts early on in the project and certainly changed this from an average space into something special,” he says.

“This is also now a very enjoyable building to work in, from the office staff to the project managers. The team is extremely proud of the end result.

“We found Angelique extremely competent to work alongside, and she designed our office space with ease.

“We needed a lot of storage space and some different requirements, and she came up with some great ideas and suggestions.”

Colin says that Zenith electric desks were essential to the office space so that the team members could choose to sit or stand while working.

Other features include the full height glass and timber slat doors, providing privacy into the boardroom and kitchen, and glass-front, full-length wall cabinetry, proudly displaying three generations of family tools.

“Reaching from the front door to the kitchen and toilets, this is something special and commented on by all that visit,” says Colin.

He adds that his company loved working with Armstrong Interiors, and other companies on the project, and they’re very happy with the award-winning results.

Judges Impressed

In awarding the project the NKBA Excellence in Commercial Spatial Innovation Design award, judges commented that “for a project with a lot of moving parts, it is very smart”. “The space is well utilised and includes excellent storage and some carefully considered details. The design tells a story, with a nod to its history. It is also a clean and fresh working environment that encourages productivity and efficiency,” they noted.
