A bid for better sleep: Dreamwool
Lucky auction-goers rest easy on a winning Dreamwool bed.
“It was a spur-of-the-moment decision,” says Steve Miller of his successful auction bid for a luxury Dreamwool bed at the BrainTree Trust’s annual ball in 2024. “We’d had our previous bed for at least 10 years, and we hadn’t really discussed replacing it. But each year we bid on a few things because it’s a great cause.”
It was the first year that Dreamwool had donated a bed to BrainTree for the auction. Steve and his wife Kathryn didn’t realise until after they won that they had bought something quite special. “David [Henderson, Dreamwool director] invited us down to the showroom after the auction, and we spent a good hour going through different options. We learned a lot about all the natural materials and care that goes into Dreamwool. I hadn’t thought much about what beds were made of before. But once you see that you’ve been sleeping on plastic, or other materials that you wouldn’t knowingly choose, you start to understand the true benefit of all-natural fibres. We really appreciate that now.”
Steve and Kathryn took the opportunity to complement their new SuperKing Paradise mattress and flexible slat frame with a complete set of sheets and accessories.
“I didn’t even know that bedding could be that good,” Steve says. “I highly recommend going that final step to maximise the comfort of the whole Dreamwool package.”
Two years on, their sleep experience has been completely transformed. “I quickly noticed that my sleeping position was much more comfortable, with a great mixture between softness and support. I started waking up fresher, and that’s just normal now. Kathryn and I also have very different body temperatures, which has been a challenge in the past. I run hot and she runs cold, but our Dreamwool bed effectively regulates the temperature for both of us.”
The benefits are most notable after a night or two away, Steve says. “Any time I sleep elsewhere – say, if one of us is ill and needs to sleep in the old bed in our spare room – I realise just how big the difference is. I never struggle to fall asleep on our Dreamwool bed, ever. I couldn’t tell you the last time I had a restless night or a bad night’s sleep.”
BrainTree Trust’s 2026 ball will be held on 13 June, where another lucky bidder will get the opportunity to experience the sleep of a lifetime. To book, go to braintree.org.nz.
