Fashion is tangible. But it’s also a feeling.
Cover girl Skye Zöfia Marryatt might sell you on that fabulous white dress from RUBY, but what she’s really communicating (runway-ready garments in tow) is a sense of excitement for what’s to come. The Christchurch Spring Fashion Festival returns for the second time in October, a translation of New Zealand Fashion Week for a South Island audience. The four-day festival combines runway shows, designer showcases, and fashion experiences, with Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre as its main base.
Beyond the collective wishlist that will undoubtedly grow with each runway, this sartorial celebration gives Christchurch’s fashion industry something it hasn’t had before… a home. A place to come together. The space to connect, nurture and encourage what exists among us – a community of creatives with big dreams and bigger talent (and an undeniable sense of style).
With a beautiful seven-page cover shoot (page 32), interviews with industry icons Dame Trelise Cooper (page 10) and Margi Robertson of NOM*d (page 12), an Aotearoa fashion designer’s strawberry and white chocolate shortcake recipe (page 47), Christchurch dog fashion (page 58), and more, this issue is our gift to that community.
In collaboration with The Crossing, we asked industry influencers Jessie Kirk and Skye Zöfia Marryatt to style themselves, taking us on the journey from shopping precinct to street style and their final destination: a fashion show. Our goal was to showcase how uniquely personal everyone’s style is – and that every aesthetic is catered to in Christchurch.
Embracing your own taste is a game of confidence.
I encourage you to find it. Buy the ticket. Wear the outfit. Sit in the FROW (that’s industry speak for the front row). Fall in love with fashion for nothing else but the fun of it. This issue has all the inspiration to be your springboard.
