Celebrate the legend of Phar Lap
On 4 October 1926 in Seadown near Timaru, one of the greatest racehorses in history, Phar Lap, was born.
This year on 4 October 2026, enjoy the action and attraction of thoroughbred racing at a feature race meeting that honours Phar Lap on his 100th birthday at the Phar Lap Raceway in Washdyke.
Phar Lap was more than a champion racehorse; he became a symbol of resilience and hope during the hardships of the Great Depression. His story continues to captivate both Kiwis, Australians, and racing enthusiasts worldwide. His legacy endures through museum exhibits, memorabilia, and his status as a cultural icon. He was an inaugural inductee into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame in 2001, the New Zealand Racing Hall of Fame in 2006 and gained legend status in 2007.
To honour Phar Lap’s legacy locally, this community-focused event combines the best racing entertainment with free childrens activities, memorabilia displays and the chance to meet Wayne Hinchliffe, friend of Phar Lap’s strapper Tommy Woodcock, an undercover bar and betting facilities, and a live DJ between races.
Pack a picnic or enjoy a meal in the Grey Way Lounge, festivities start from 12pm with free return buses running from Timaru to the raceway.
