When it comes to creating something out of the ordinary, Sam Stakenburg at The Sugar Room is your baker because she loves a challenge. “A recent request was a 90cm wide cake decorated with seasonal berries. I baked it in parts and assembled it on-site on the day. It was the showstopper the bride had hoped for.”
How does she make the magic happen? The planning process begins with couples sending Sam pictures of designs and ideas for flavours. “Tastings happen every second month. Each couple receives a tasting box of popular flavours and any specific requests, plus a scoring card so they can choose at home at their leisure.” They then sit down together, and Sam combines the couple’s vision with her professional advice to create a showstopper.
“There are standard questions like how many guests, and is the cake the dessert or to have with coffee? Then we get into the really fun stuff, which is the details of the design. We finalise the flavours clients like, and I love to suggest winning and unusual combinations,” says Sam.
