The latest Quarterly Canterbury Business Survey shows local businesses are holding steady yet confidence is failing to lift.

After a strong rebound late last year, confidence has steadied in 2025 rather than continuing its upward climb, with consumer demand slower to recover and global uncertainty still casting a shadow.

That said, the outlook remains broadly positive. Sixty per cent of businesses in Canterbury plan to invest in property, plant or equipment over the next 12 months, and 59% expect to hire in the year ahead.

Canterbury’s diversified economy and strong inward migration give us a solid foundation for future growth when conditions improve, and we are looking forward to seeing that play out as we hurtle toward 2026.
