Art with purpose: Art Metro

One local gallery has established itself as a cornerstone of Canterbury’s community arts scene.

As well as offering professional and individualised fine arts tuition, Art Metro is currently displaying a series of stunning works by two of their tutors, Malene Laugesen and Veronique Lambert. Danish-born Malene’s work draws on her background as an animator and illustrator. In her Midnight Mall series, melancholy colour palettes and an exquisite delicate touch help to reframe familiar architectural environments with a distant, dream-like quality.

The paintings of French-New Zealander Veronique, contrarily, explore the shifts in colour and light seen in the world around us. With a particular interest in seascapes and motion, her work captures moments of transition, richly rendered in oil and acrylic.

The Platform @ Art Metro also helps to grow the Ōtautahi arts community, with 10% of sales going toward holiday art programs for children from local schools who otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford it. It’s a win-win, an exhibition with stunning artworks and a beautiful kaupapa behind them.

Visit the Art Metro gallery at 465 Papanui Road for this fabulous exhibition, and to learn all about the creative opportunities on offer.
