Striking gold in Central Otago

Built into schist, a stunning family home overlooking Lake Dunstan and the Pisa Range blends into the rocky hillside, its simple form creating a symbiosis between the built and natural environments.

Hunter & Craig Building & Design built this Registered Master Builders House of Year 2020 Gold Award-winning home. It was an evolution of a miner’s cottage Hunter & Craig designed and built on the site four years ago.

“The owners wanted the new R and J Architecture-designed house to look as if the ‘miners’ in the cottage had struck gold,” says Hunter & Craig co-owner, Shaun Hunter.

The original miner’s cottage remains on site and is now connected to the main house with a DoC-style boardwalk.

Constructed from cedar and local schist, the house is a stunning display of craftsmanship, set against the picturesque natural landscapes with 360-degree views.

“The owners wanted the house to look as natural as possible in the landscape, so we took the utmost care to ensure we didn’t disturb any more rock than we needed to.”

That rock needed to be drilled into to lay the foundations, but was no drama for Shaun and business co-owner, Derek Craig.

“Although we didn’t design this project, we can do everything from design and consenting to build,” says Shaun. “We can do everything, or just the part of the process you need.”

The company specialises in high-end homes in Central Otago, with over 50 years industry experience between the co-owners.
