As winter begins to make its chilly presence felt, there’s still plenty of fun activities to keep the whole family busy, active and entertained in Ashburton over the next few months. Here’s our list of top events coming up to get you through those colder days and nights.

 

 

1. Room on the Broom
Room on the Broom is the latest must-see live entertainment for children that will captivate young imaginations. Adapted from the award-winning picture book by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler, the show will be held at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre on Saturday 15 June at 12pm and 3pm. Prepare to be enchanted by the witch and her cat, along with a cast that includes a dog, a bird, a frog, and… a hungry dragon. 2. Heartland Music Festival
The vocal prowess of Mid Canterbury’s local school choirs will be on display over two spectacular evenings in June. On Wednesday 12 and Thursday 13 June, from 7:30pm until 9:30pm, the Ashburton Trust Event Centre will host the annual Choral Festival, featuring Hinds, Longbeach, Allenton, Netherby and Tinwald Schools, plus many more! 3. Adam McGrath
Well-known to music lovers in Canterbury for his twist on country-folk influenced sets, Adam McGrath is back to wow Ashburton audiences on Friday 14 June. 4. Dance Worx Ashburton Celebrates 50 Years
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Dance Worx Ashburton, a special function will be held on Saturday 22 June at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre. Students will dance through the 50 years, covering everything from classical ballet to jazz funk. To secure tickets, visit www.ticketdirect.co.nz


5. Simon O’Neill Recital
Described as “The Wagnerian Tenor of his generation”, Simon O’Neill returns to Ashburton on Thursday 4 July for a special concert, with Ian Paterson (bass-baritone) and Terence Dennis on piano, at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre. To secure tickets, visit www.eventfinda.co.nz


6. South Island Half Marathon
If you need a goal to keep yourself motivated throughout the winter months, why not start training for the South Island Half Marathon? Held at Lake Hood’s Huntington Park on Sunday 4 August, the marathon takes you around the beautiful lake and past stunning homes, gardens and reserves.
