Why go electric?
The number of electric vehicles on New Zealand’s roads is increasing steadily, as more models become available, designs and technology improve.
Electric vehicles now include cars, buses, trucks of all sizes, and even big-rig tractor trailers that are at least partially powered by electricity.
Electric vehicles fall into three main categories:
– Battery electric vehicles powered by electricity stored in a battery pack.
– Plug-in hybrids which combine a petrol or diesel engine with an electric motor and large rechargeable battery.
– Fuel cell vehicles that split electrons from hydrogen molecules to produce electricity to run the motor.
Here are some reasons for switching to electric:
1. Electric vehicles are saving the climate.
Petrol and diesel driven vehicles are a large source of climate pollution. Going electric will lessen dangerous emissions.
2. A healthier option.
Emissions from cars and trucks are not only bad for our planet, they’re bad for our health, contributing to conditions including lung disease, asthma, bronchitis, and cancer.
3. Smaller carbon footprint.
EVs have a smaller carbon footprint than petrol and diesel -powered vehicles, no matter where your electricity comes from.
