Having marked her brand’s 20th anniversary in March, STORM founder and creative director Deb Caldwell has pioneered New Zealand fashion long enough to see fads come and go and core trends cycle back around.

“Trends often return after roughly 20 years because of nostalgia,” Deb says. “Right now, international fashion trends for autumn and winter 2026 are defined by a mix of opulent nostalgia and functional, tailored comfort.”

What colours and palettes are key this season?
Tones include cerulean, rich teal and deep navy. We’ll still be seeing the continuation of cool toned browns including bitter chocolate, cinnamon, toffee and taupe, burgundy shades of merlot and raisin, and key neutrals include olive, navy, and white.

Are silhouettes really transforming?
A pivot toward 80s-inspired, structured suiting with prominent shoulders is evident and we’re seeing a significant shift toward slimmer, more tailored tops and outerwear.

Which fabrics and textures should we get excited about?
Opulent metallics inspired by the 80s and animal prints, velvet, leather and suede are all going to be on high rotation over the cooler months. Luxurious and heavy textures are paramount, including the widespread use of fur accents, intricate cable-knits, as well as denim.

How do we wear these trends in New Zealand?
New Zealanders typically take an international trend and soften it a little. The brave will be rocking bold, padded 80’s shoulders and belted cinched waists. Lace is back in a big way, and it layers really well, while metallics and animal print combine easily. Leather and suede bombers are super comfortable and a gentler way to add some 80s to your wardrobe too. Our love affair with denim lives on but with a sharper silhouette this season – straight legs, stove pipes and even skinnies will be back in our wardrobes.

Tell us about the trends for autumn?
The trend toward functional fashion continues, with a focus on polished but comfortable attire. There is less emphasis on clean, polished perfection, and more on layering, styling and wearing the pieces we love, accessorised in ways that reflect our personality. We’re also seeing animal print and houndstooth.

What are you wearing on repeat this season?
I’m always a fan of an oversized rocker tee paired with skirts, jeans, boots and a blazer. At the moment, we’re doing a side tuck with the tee, adding a blazer, a belt and layering some necklaces.
