Before babies can talk, they have plenty to say. A smile, a point, a wave – these early gestures are the building blocks of communication. Baby signing helps families build on those natural skills through music, movement and simple signs.
Baby signing isn’t about replacing speech or teaching formal sign language. Instead, it introduces simple, easy-to-learn signs alongside spoken words, giving babies a way to express their needs, thoughts and feelings before they have the words to do so. From asking for ‘more’ at mealtimes to signing ‘milk’, ‘finished’ or ‘sleep’, these small gestures can help bridge the gap between understanding language and being able to speak it.
Research suggests babies often understand far more than they can say. Using signs alongside speech can reduce frustration, encourage confidence and support language development, while creating meaningful moments of interaction between parent and child. Combined with songs, rhymes and play, signing becomes a fun, engaging way to strengthen communication and deepen connection during those precious early years.
Christchurch families can explore these benefits through Sing and Sign, an internationally recognised programme led locally by Becky Clarke. Classes are tailored to different developmental stages, from newborns through to toddlers, with songs, games and age-appropriate signs that grow alongside each child’s abilities.
“Parents often tell us they want to connect more with their children but are unsure how to engage in simple, developmentally appropriate play without relying on toys, devices, or structured activities,” Becky says.
“Sing and Sign provides a practical solution by teaching parents how to interact through songs, rhymes, eye contact, gestures, and shared experiences. These simple activities encourage children to focus on communication and connection rather than entertainment, helping to build the foundations for language, learning, and positive relationships.”
The classes also provide a welcoming space for parents and caregivers to meet others at a similar stage of family life.
