Taking off the eye patch: Hamish Campbell

Sometimes I take off my eye patch and think objectively about why so many of us choose to live in Christchurch.

Hamish Campbell – MP for Ilam

Born and raised in Ilam, I left Christchurch to complete my PhD at Otago before building a career as a cancer research scientist and later as deputy head of research at Multiple Sclerosis in Australia.

Like many New Zealanders, however, my family and I returned home due to the pull of family and friends, and the desire for our children to grow up here. But also, because Christchurch offers something special: opportunity, affordability, and an outstanding quality of life.

We enjoy world-class sports facilities, a vibrant arts and culture scene and easy access to some of New Zealand’s most spectacular natural landscapes.

As a local MP, I have worked to make Christchurch an even better place to live by advocating for improved healthcare, education, infrastructure and community safety. I have also supported funding to grow Christchurch and Canterbury’s economy and tourism, creating opportunities for local businesses and jobs.

Latest data backs up what Cantabrians already know. In the year to March 2026, Christchurch’s economy grew by 1.1%, well ahead of New Zealand’s 0.4% growth. Unemployment sat at 4.4%, significantly below the national rate of 5.7%, while labour force participation remained higher than the national average. Construction activity continues to surge, with building consents rising nearly 39% compared with 15% nationally, and international visitor spending increased by more than 10%.

While challenges remain, Christchurch enters this period from a position of strength. Our economy is growing, businesses are investing, and confidence in our city is building.

I believe Christchurch’s best days are not behind us, they are still ahead.
