Exquisite new season edit: Mikko Shoes

As the leaves begin to fall around our beautiful city, Mikko Shoes presents an exciting collection of quality European footwear and handbags for the cool weather to come. To give us some wintry wardrobe inspiration, we spoke with Mikko’s founder, Michaela Longstaff, about what key pieces we can expect in store this season.

Phineas Pikolinos

Hi Michaela, so nice to chat with you about AW21 at Mikko! Tell us, in footwear this season, what is the key colour palette?

“I think this has to be my favourite season to date, when it comes to colour. Ultra-luxe and ultra-wearable, our focus is on indulgently rich shades of green, understated but chic tones of grey, decadent hues of vanilla, nougat, biscuit and toffee, and, for a pop of colour, a wardrobe-brightening maraschino cherry.”

How about new styles – what’s a must-have this season?

“Those who love flats will adore our edit this season, as there are many silhouettes to enjoy with a lower heel. As fashion takes a less corporate tone with a reflection on world events, it’s about comfort, versatility and practicality whilst still feeling sophisticated in the process – think combat boots, ladylike loafers, and metallic embellishments for elevated everyday style.”

And for off-duty moments, can we expect your renowned offering of sports-luxe footwear options?

“Absolutely, our Sporty Chic collection houses a number of versatile and edgy wedges, lace-ups and new takes on the classic tennis shoe. With a polished play on tones and textures and the perfect combination of form and function, sporty can indeed mean sophisticated!”

Sophisticated style afoot: Mikko Shoes

Mikko Shoes’ new season collection is an enchanting offering of energising colourways and sophisticated shapes providing ample inspiration for the warmer months ahead. Metropol spoke with founder and buyer, Michaela, about this season’s trends and the Mikko difference.

I launched Mikko in 2013 to offer an extensive range of European hand selected and handcrafted quality shoes for women who wanted stylish footwear, without having to compromise on comfort. I felt there was an opportunity to provide a truly personalised instore experience – our team are professionally trained in fitting and styling.

Europe is the origin of shoemaking with a rich history of quality and excellent craftsmanship. The brands we choose are family-owned businesses, just like us. Each brand has its own story and every shoe has four things in common: comfort, quality, style and value. Since day one, we have prioritised artisanal quality, unparalleled comfort and timeless design that will last.

There are two ends of the colour spectrum to enjoy. Poolside Daydream – punchy, playful, ‘60s inspired tones of fuchsia, coral and teal – and Design Emotion – a Nordic-inspired, earthy palette, think jute, woodgrain and cork; a textural blend of sophistication and warmth.

We see an evolution of the interesting silhouettes, finishes and features introduced in winter – large scale exotic prints, the ‘90s square toe, brushed metallics and the architectural heel. Also new are corsage trims with glamorous oversized adornments.

Sneakers are seasonless! We love fresh interpretations like platform soles, metallic touches, animal prints and retro influences. We’ve also launched DL Sport – an Italian luxury casual sneaker range.

The vibe is joyful, inspiring and optimistic – and who isn’t feeling in the mood for that?

Decadent New Cool Weather Collection

An irresistible offering in rich moody hues, Mikko’s sumptuous new autumn/winter collection has just arrived at the Victoria Street store and it is all the inspiration needed for the wintry season ahead.

Alongside the classic, cool weather colour palette, new styles in mustard yellow, army greens, ivory and pepper grey will add a little excitement to any outfit – ideal on those cold mornings where a little mood boost is certainly welcome.

The hand-selected curation by Mikko’s founder and buyer Michaela comes direct from the company’s trusted group of artisanal European brands, including Ara, Arche, Hogl and more.

A melange of new silhouettes and updated takes on the essentials, it’s a collection that has us looking forward to cooler weather.

This season’s boots feature a number of interesting elements that will refresh your wardrobe with minimal effort.

Bold lace-up styles are here, along with stunning architectural heels. A trend not to miss is Mikko’s nod to the western style – square toes, buckles and two-toned toe-caps.

Meanwhile in the casual department, sneakers have reigned supreme of late and for 2020, their elegant counterpart, the Parisian ballet flat makes a welcome return.

No matter your outfit, this classic footwear staple will transform any look with effortless polish – perfect for transseasonal dressing before winter truly sets in.

It’s great to see that animal print still features in various forms this season, from sneakers to boots and the aforementioned ballet flats – there’s a style to suit every taste.

As always at Mikko, fit and construction are just as integral as colour and shape – comfort and quality are core values for the family-run business.

So head into store to check out the luxurious new collection of timeless, wearable classics with a twist.

You’ll be sure to leave feeling inspired for the change of season ahead.

Best foot forward: Mikko Shoes

It’s been six months since Mikko Shoes arrived in Christchurch and opened its beautiful Victoria Street store. After a busy winter, the family-owned company has been preparing for the warm season ahead.

Metropol sat down with Mikko’s founder, Michaela Longstaff, to discuss some of the new trends arriving in store now.

  1. What are the key trends to look out for this coming spring/summer?
Each new season we look for the vibrant new styles that are on trend, while ensuring they still feel classic enough to last for years to come. A great example of this is animal print – a huge trend for spring, but in our opinion, it’s now a neutral. This season the print du jour is the subtle, sophisticated snakeskin texture – we’re huge fans.
  2. How about new colour palettes?
It’s all about those citrus and sorbet tones. From peppermint and seafoam to tangy tangerine, we can’t get enough of these dreamy feminine and joyfully bold colours that bring grace and energy to summer dressing.
  3. What new shapes are you excited about this season?
There are so many beautiful, interesting heel shapes. Our elegant courts range includes styles with sculptured, art deco inspired heels which add gorgeous sophistication. And of course, Mikko shoes come in premium, soft leather and offer foot support. Comfort has never been so fashionable.

Stepping Up: Mikko Shoes

NZ family-owned and operated Mikko Shoes has finally opened the doors to its first South Island store; a beautiful boutique in central Christchurch.

Founder and buyer Michaela Longstaff established Mikko in 2013, after noticing a gap in the market for fabulous footwear that didn’t compromise on comfort. Making it her mission to source high quality, handcrafted shoes that not only looked beautiful but were also a joy to wear, Michaela soon found herself in Europe – the origin of shoe making with its rich history of character and craftsmanship.

Six years on, each style is still hand-picked by Michaela from the Northern Hemisphere for the anticipated season ahead and, until now, could only be experienced in the North Island or online. But after noticing an ever-increasing list of online orders heading to Christchurch addresses, Michaela decided it was time to open their sixth Mikko store in the Garden City.

“At our core, we are passionate about helping women to find the right fit,” Michaela says. “So whilst we offer an online fitting service, I was determined to find a beautiful storefront in Christchurch where women could fully experience our range, be inspired and looked after by our highly experienced styling staff.”

Michaela was also keen to interact more directly with the women who have been supporting Mikko from Christchurch since the Auckland-based company first launched. “Having a physical presence here now means we get instant feedback from our customer, which helps us to better improve our service and range selection, season after season,” she says.

No matter the trend, functionality, comfort and quality are at the forefront of every pair on offer. From Arche of France’s Loire Valley to Hispanitas of Alicante in Spain, behind each of the brands stocked at Mikko is a family-owned business that is passionate about these same key principles.

Each shoe is made with the softest of leathers, cushioned insoles and durable, shock absorbent outsoles. Cutting edge technology is married with tried and tested traditions for the ultimate, well-rounded design.

With an array of silhouettes available for work, evening and events through to everyday flats and sneakers, each style seamlessly fuses function with fashion. Oh, and did we mention, they stock handbags to match, too?
