Still out there: The Lung Mechanic

While most New Zealanders feel the worst of Covid-19 is behind us, unfortunately, the opposite is true, and it’s called Long Covid.

Current statistics show that 1 in 10 people who get Covid-19 will still have symptoms 12 weeks after infection.
Catherine George of The Lung Mechanic says that with up to 200 symptoms suggesting Long Covid, often it is a case of diagnosis by exclusion.

“The four main symptoms of Long Covid, that I see, are breathlessness, coughing, chest pain, and fatigue,” Catherine explains.
Catherine says people often think pushing through the illness, such as a long walk in the fresh air, is the cure, but this can create post exertional fatigue which makes symptoms worse.

Self-management, such as improving breathing patterns, has been shown to calm the nervous system, and reduce breathlessness and coughing. Pacing techniques and fatigue management are also essential.

“There is currently no cure for Long Covid, but seeing a respiratory physiotherapist and learning well researched techniques support your recovery.” Book an appointment with The Lung Mechanic if you have concerns about Long Covid or breathlessness.
