Snow happy

Our best winter memories and cherished family photos often come from moments spent in the snow, so make the most of it before the spring nor’ westers arrive.

In Canterbury, we’re surrounded by snow-capped mountains and snow-laden spaces perfect for day trips or weekend getaways. Trust us, treat your children to the ultimate experience of winter wonder. Sport or not, time in the snow offers stress relief, socialisation, and a disconnect from technology. Plus, it’s a wonderful opportunity for family bonding.

A blank canvas for creativity, playing in the snow encourages problem-solving and imagination, while learning to ski or snowboard helps children build new skills. Spend some unplugged time together in some of the best scenery on offer.

Of course, not all snow should be enjoyed on foot. Specialist helicopter tours can take you above and beyond mountain peaks to appreciate the views at their most majestic. Find options further south from Mount Cook, Twizel, and Fox or Franz Josef Glaciers.

Your guide to après-ski

Eat: Book in at a nearby restaurant to enjoy and connect with others, warming your belly up after a busy and tiring day.
Drink: Before your dinner reservation, find a cosy bar or tasting room and sit fireside – it could be joining friends made on the slopes. Hydration is key after a day on the snow, so be mindful of consuming enough water to balance any alcohol in your system.
Unwind: Relax at nearby hot pools in Methven or Hanmer Springs, simultaneously soothing your muscles through heat and jet massage.
Pamper: Hold après-ski to its international value by treating yourself to a serene skin or body treatment at a local spa studio.

Prepare for snow play by:

  • Layering up in the right gear. Warm, waterproof and insulated clothing is ideal, alongside the right accessories and equipment for playing in the snow or shredding the mountain.
  • Packing the essentials: sunscreen, a first-aid kit, extra base and outer layers, water.
  • Not forgetting fuel: No, not gas – the fuel that will keep your children energised after an exhilarating yet exhausting day in the snow. Sandwiches, trail mix, granola bars, fruit, and sweets such as chocolate are great.
  • Being aware of your route, the conditions, and your vehicle. Know where you’re going and take steps to get there safely, and be ready with snow chains when travelling to a ski area.
  • Heading away early and allowing time for stops and snack breaks.
