Recycle pet food packaging: Royal Canin

Fighting the war on waste, the Petstock Group has joined forces with Royal Canin and TerraCycle, launching a recycling programme across New Zealand, for all brands of pet food packaging.

Nearly two-thirds of Kiwi households own a dog or cat, meaning a significant stream of pet food materials contributing to New Zealand’s waste numbers. Pet food tins and cardboard packaging can go into household recycling bins, however New Zealand pet owners have had limited opportunities to recycle pet food soft plastic packaging, such as dog and cat kibble bags and wet food pouches, until recently.

Now, the Petstock Group has store recycling collection points, that can be found at Petstock Ferrymead, and Petstock Northwood in Christchurch. Pet owners can return clean pet specific soft plastics to the stores, and deposit them in the Royal Canin Recycling Program boxes. Once the collection boxes are full, Petstock team members will ship them to TerraCycle, where the contents will be manually sorted into different waste streams and sent on to specialised processing facilities to be converted into recycled raw materials.

These raw materials can then be used to produce new products, to close the loop of the recycling journey. The end products may include benches, pot plants, compost bins, playgrounds, dog agility equipment, and more.
