Personal taste to the fore: Luke Gardner

Outdoor entertaining is something to factor-in during the design process for your new-build home. Luke Gardner shares some ideas for creating your perfect outdoor space.

“It’s about your own personal taste and just about anything goes.”

When coming up with a plan, think about the situation of your section, your house shape and size, and its exposure to the elements.

“Have a couple of points around your house for outdoor living, one that gets morning sun and one for afternoon sun. The main one could have an outdoor fire or a water feature and the other one could have a table and chairs for breakfast.”

There are no hard and fast rules when it comes to trees or other plants, just think about how the colours work.

Things can look a bit different once the job is underway, so this is something to anticipate and have some flexibility around. It’s okay to change your mind.

Luke involves his clients every step of the way, working with the landscape designer’s plan, or if the client knows what they want he can do a sketch for them.
