Lyttelton, historic to hipster

Soon to host the upcoming ITM New Zealand Sail Grand Prix, Lyttelton, a port town located on the picturesque Banks Peninsula, is an area rich in architectural history.

In 2009 Lyttelton was awarded Category I Historic Area status by the Historic Places Trust.

The town’s historical significance was severely impacted by the devastating earthquakes that struck the region in 2010 and 2011, which led to the widespread demolition of many of its iconic historic buildings. Despite this tragedy, the town has successfully remade itself into a bohemian epicentre, with a unique blend of fusion restaurants, excellent gig locations, second-hand bookshops, great cafes, and a performing arts theatre.

Lyttelton has also seen significant developments in recent years, with the construction of a new marina that can accommodate large cruise ships. As Covid-19 restrictions subside, the port’s new infrastructure will undoubtedly be put to good use, allowing visitors to explore the charming town and its stunning natural surroundings. The town’s grand port hills provide a stunning backdrop to the bustling community, and its nearby bays, such as Corsair, offer opportunities for outdoor activities including swimming and boating.

Lyttelton is a town that offers an inspiring experience for both newcomers and long-time residents. Its vibrant and eclectic culture, combined with its stunning natural beauty, makes it a must-visit destination in the South Island.
