Living la vida low-tox: Cut the Crap
A personal health wake-up call led a Christchurch entrepreneur to question the ingredients in everyday beauty products and create low-tox alternatives.
“Your skin is the largest organ on your body, and what you put on it goes straight into your bloodstream,” says Luana Griffin, founder of low-tox hair and skincare brand Cut the Crap.
“We’re bombarded with toxins every day, which is why I try to educate people about lowering their toxic load and inspire them to make better choices,” she says.
Her message comes from personal experience. At age 21, Luana faced a significant health scare. Her healing journey prompted her to take a closer look at the role everyday products play in overall health. To reduce her toxic load, Luana started making all-natural shampoo bars and skincare, which sparked the birth of
Cut the Crap in 2019.
“I started researching what I was putting in, on and around my body. It opened my eyes to how many chemicals are in everyday products. Most people think that if something’s on the supermarket shelf, it must be safe,” Luana says. “But vague terms like ‘fragrance’ are used by some companies to disguise nasty chemicals known to disrupt hormones. I want to educate people on lowering their toxic load so they can live healthier and feel better,” she says.
That might mean switching to natural skincare, trying shampoo bars, or replacing synthetic fragrances with essential oils.
“There are so many easy swaps,” Luana says. “Like making your own room sprays and air fresheners with essential oils instead of using toxic plug-ins or synthetic candles.”
Today, Luana sells a full range of bath, hair and skin products. Bestsellers include skin brightening serums, solid shampoo and conditioner sets, magnesium recovery products, and face creams. Shop the range at the website below.
