Improving health, and reducing poverty: Vanessa Weenink, MP Banks Peninsula

As the MP for Banks Peninsula and a former GP, I have always been deeply committed to healthcare that serves our whole community.

My journey into Parliament was driven by the desire to create policies that extend beyond individual instances of care; they aim to uplift entire populations. I am excited about the ambitious health targets announced by Health Minister, Dr Shane Reti. These targets directly address the pressing healthcare needs that I hear about from my constituents daily.

Our Government’s plan sets clear targets to deliver faster cancer treatments, improve childhood vaccination rates, reduce emergency department wait times, and ensure quicker assessments and treatments for those who are ill.

This is not just about numbers; it’s about the lives these changes will impact. Implementing effective health plans is one of the most crucial responsibilities we have. I also serve on the Economic Development, Science and Innovation Select Committee, an area that complements health policy. By boosting our economy, we are directly enhancing our capacity to invest in the frontlines of healthcare.

Reducing poverty is fundamental to improving health outcomes, and I believe that a healthy population is crucial for a prosperous society.
