Hot spots for school holidays

School holidays don’t have to mean sitting around with angsty, bored youngsters. There’s plenty to do and something for everyone right here in Christchurch, or take a trip north, south, east or west, for a day, a weekend, or longer.

Get outdoors
Take the kids on a hike or bike ride to burn off some energy. Head up the Port Hills with rewarding views of Ōtautahi from the top. Or, explore Hagley Park, which boasts several walking tracks, the botanic gardens, and a children’s playground.

A fun day out
Head to one of Christchurch’s many go-karting, arcade, or mini golf complexes for a guaranteed thrill. Challenge the family to a friendly game of mini golf or laser tag, ideal for a day of family fun to tire children out, even if the weather disappoints.

Time to learn
While it may be a break from school, there are still plenty of opportunities to encourage learning. Discover history and excite imaginations at one of Christchurch’s many museums or The Arts Centre Te Matatiki Toi Ora. Currently on show at the Canterbury Museum at CoCA, check out the amazing Wildlife Photography of the Year exhibit. Teach our youngsters about the historic earthquakes that rocked the city at Quake City.

A bite to eat
Amid your busy day, stop by one of Christchurch’s vibrant markets and grab something to eat. For something substantial, head to a local café, or try an afternoon treat at a dessert parlour. Go budget-friendly at Margaret Mahy Playground with a picnic to enjoy while the children play.
