Hair colour game-changer: Colour Me Safe

A significant global finding gathered from hair salon owners during the pandemic is an increase in allergic reactions amongst those who had previously tested positive for Covid-19.

Though still no official research into Covid-19’s long-term effects on the immune system or on the development of allergies, it does highlight the vital need for regular patch testing pre-haircolouring, as already practised in the UK.

Lisa Steele-Willets is the founder of Colour Me Safe, a New Zealand owned and operated company that provides a game-changer to the hair and beauty industry.

University of Canterbury’s School of Product Design came aboard three years ago to help Lisa develop an innovative solution for an easy testing method.

Testing can happen either in-salon or be delivered to the customer’s door, saving time for both salons and their customers.

The custom-made kits test for any allergic reaction response 24 to 48 hours before colouring, with all tests and results recorded so salons can advise clients when their next test is due.

“Our goal is to reduce the risk of an allergic reaction and avoid unnecessary discomfort. Safety should be paramount. Testing is critical to ensure client safety,” Lisa says.
