Greece is the word: Breaking Plates

“Opa!” If you were one of the thousands that once partied through our city’s two renowned Greek eateries, the Mykonos and the Santorini, then brace yourself for a blast from your past.

Breaking Plates – The Musical is an epic show that transports you back to those halcyon nights when nobody stayed seated once the music began and everyone thought they danced better than Zorba the Greek.

Written by Costa Kerdemelidis (musician and former owner of the Mykonos Greek Taverna and the Santorini Greek Ouzeri), the musical is set in Christchurch during the time of the earthquakes.

The story follows father of four Yorgo, who, while grappling with the earth’s moving tectonic plates is also grappling with a changing world that he doesn’t want to change. “Yorgo is a good man but his implacably held beliefs and traditions that he imposes on his children are seriously put to the test,” Costa explains.

The musical features original Greek music, with English lyrics helping to narrate the story and move the action. Directed by the acclaimed Ravil Atlas, with Deen Coulson as Musical Director and Michael Bayly as Yorgo, the show features a richly talented and professional crew of singers and dancers.
