From the Editor: The Chill Factor

Crisp days, lots of pristine snow even down to sea level, and mostly fine weather bring with them exciting opportunities to appreciate our region’s winter wonderland and its amazing outdoor adventures.

We’re now in what are arguably some of the coldest weeks of the year, especially with temperatures dropping well into the minus range in many parts. Now’s when the skis and snowboards come into their own, with locals and tourists hitting the slopes.

Christchurch is surrounded by an amazing array of ski areas, suitable for beginners right through to experienced skiers and boarders, and most are one to three hours drive away.

From Mt Hutt, to the Porters Ski Area, Mount Cheeseman to Broken River Ski Area, and the Craigieburn Valley Ski Area, there’s a slope out there for all levels of expertise.

Part of the experience is also visiting new or familiar destinations, such as Hanmer, Methven, Queenstown and Oamaru where the hospitality sectors offer a warm welcome for those chilling out on the slopes during the day.

Snow is fun for all ages, from rolling snowballs, and making snowmen, to the thrill of gliding expertly over powdery fields, with a warm fire and hot toddy waiting at the base.

If you haven’t tried skiing or boarding before, give it a go. Most fields have expert instructors, and they welcome beginners and those in need of a refresher session.

Now is the time to add a few layers and make the most of the cold season, so what are you waiting for?
