A truly local café has a charm that invites customers to stay for more than just a short time.

In Hillsborough lies a perfect such retreat. Bright and open, INSITU Cafe offers plenty of eclectic sofas, chairs and tables to perch at surrounded by a modern mix of décor and artwork.

Owner Rohit Bhardwaj fell in love with the café less than a year ago. “The location was perfect with its beautiful view of the Port Hills,” he says. “I come from the Himalayan region of India so this felt like coming home.”

Known for offering a variety of delights for breakfast, brunch and lunch, Rohit is continuing INSITU Cafe’s success, tweaking the menu to perfection. Enjoy a classic breakfast or veggie version, eggs Benedict, and the ever-popular avo smash or creamy mushrooms. Burgers and fries are on the menu too, alongside a constantly changing chef’s special salad. For a snack, find an array of tempting savoury and sweet treats in the cabinet.

A café specialty is the High Tea, available daily in the afternoon from 2 to 3pm. “It’s a chance for our chefs to tap into their creative side and of course we serve it in beautiful china cups and teapots.”
